From "The Tyranny of Things" by Elizabeth Morris

Once upon a time, when I was very tired, I chanced to go away to a little house by the sea. "It is empty," they said, "but you can easily furnish it." Empty! Yes, thank Heaven! Furnish it? Heaven forbid! Its floors were bare, its walls were bare, its tables there were only two in the house were bare. There was nothing in the closets but books; nothing in the bureau drawers but the smell of clean, fresh wood; nothing in the kitchen but an oil stove, and a few a very few dishes; nothing in the attic but rafters and sunshine, and a view of the sea. After I had been there an hour there descended upon me a great peace, a sense of freedom, of in finite leisure. In the twilight I sat before the flickering embers of the open fire, and looked out through the open door to the sea, and asked myself, "Why?" Then the answer came: I was emancipated from things. There was nothing in the house to demand care, to claim attention, to cumber my consciousness with its insistent, unchanging companionship. There was nothing but a shelter, and outside, the fields and marshes, the shore and the sea. These did not have to be taken down and put up and arranged and dusted and cared for. They were not things at all, they were powers, presences.

And so I rested. While the spell was still unbroken, I came away. For broken it would have been, I know, had I not fled first. Even in this refuge the enemy would have pursued me, found me out, encompassed me.

If we could but free ourselves once for all, how simple life might become! One of my friends, who, with six young children and only one servant, keeps a spotless house and a soul serene, told me once how she did it. "My dear, once a month I give away every single thing in the house that we do not imperatively need. It sounds wasteful, but I don’t believe it really is. Sometimes Jeremiah mourns over missing old clothes, or back numbers of the magazines, but I tell him if he doesn’t want to be mated to a gibbering maniac he will let me do as I like."

The old monks knew all this very well. One wonders sometimes how they got their power; but go up to Fiesole, and sit a while in one of those little, bare, white-walled cells, and you will begin to understand. If there were any spiritual force in one, it would have to come out there.

I have not their courage, and I win no such freedom. I allow myself to be overwhelmed by the invading host of things, making fitful resistance, but without any real steadiness of purpose. Yet never do I wholly give up the struggle, and in my heart I cherish an ideal, remotely typified by that empty little house beside the sea.

THE FRENCH REVOLUTION
The French Revolution was indeed a monumental event in French history. The main cause behind the French Revolution was the oppression of the French people coupled with increased taxes and a rise in food prices. The French monarchy was at the brink of bankruptcy, and it imposed high taxes on its citizens.

During the French Revolution, King Louis XVI was executed, along with his wife, Marie Antoinette. The people wanted to establish a democracy, but the results were far from what they expected. They only managed to replace one dysfunctional system with another. The French Revolution led to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte and wars with neighboring European countries.

Passage from Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

(1) One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections. The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked.

(2) "What's happened to me?" he thought. It wasn't a dream. His room, a proper human room although a little too small, lay peacefully between its four familiar walls. A collection of textile samples lay spread out on the table—Samsa was a travelling salesman—and above it there hung a picture that he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice, gilded frame. It showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright, raising a heavy fur muff that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer.

(3) Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. Drops of rain could be heard hitting the pane, which made him feel quite sad. "How about if I sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense," he thought, but that was something he was unable to do because he was used to sleeping on his right, and in his present state couldn't get into that position. However hard he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled back to where he was. He must have tried it a hundred times, shut his eyes so that he wouldn't have to look at the floundering legs, and only stopped when he began to feel a mild, dull pain there that he had never felt before.

Read the sentence from the passage and answer the question that follows:

His room, a proper human room although a little too small, lay peacefully between its four familiar walls.

What does the word "proper" in this passage suggest about Gregor's room?

It has a window and a door to allow light in.
It is a decorous and trendy room for entertaining.
It is a normal room, functioning as a bedroom.
It is room where immorality takes place.

Write an essay explaining one way people can work together to make a difference. Today write a 4 square, and
the introduction paragraph. Make sure your thesis is specific and an argument. Work on a hook and place your
thesis as the last sentence of the introduction paragraph.

Answers

Answer:

In today's world, a lot can be said about making a difference. People who believe that they can make a difference are the people who shape our society today. Those individuals have helped us in bettering the world we have today.

Making a difference was just as important over a hundred years ago as it is today. It is important to keep in mind that one person can and has made a difference. Take for example Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King in the Civil Rights movement. I want to make an impact on the world much like theirs and change the views of our society.

I have, for the majority of my life, lived a sheltered life, and have never realized how corrupt our society really was. Our nation has, in some ways, proved to be without moral. In fact, the entire world is based on "the rich get richer" theory.

At the end of Chapter 3, Nick meets Jordan again. The author includes several episodes that emphasize her carelessness and basic dishonesty. Discuss these instances. What do they reveal about Jordan

Answers

Explanation:

In one instance, we are told about an incident in which Jordan had left the top of a borrowed convertible car opened when it was raining, however, she later lied about it refusing to accept responsibility.

Another episode occurred when Jordan dishonestly moved her ball to a better position during the semi-finals of "her first big golf tournament."

In another instance, Jordan refused to acknowledge her faults when she almost hit a workman with her car.

In all of these instances, the authors reveal to the reader that Jordan has a dead conscience towards saying the truth and doing the right thing. In other words, she has a wrong view of self; giving thought only to her interest.

What is a Lawyer?

A person who practices law is known as a lawyer. In various legal systems, a lawyer's duties are very different. An attorney can be categorized as an advocate, attorney, barrister, canon lawyer, civil law notary, counsel, counselor, solicitor, legal executive, or public servant, each of which has distinct responsibilities and rights. [1] In most cases, a lawyer's job entails using practical legal expertise and abstract legal theories to address particular issues. Some attorneys focus their work primarily on furthering the goals of the legal system and profession.

In the majority of modern nations, the legislature has given the executive branch administrative agencies that regulate such things' original jurisdiction over highly technical topics. Because of this, some attorneys have chosen to specialize in administrative law. Because of this, some attorneys have chosen to specialize in administrative law. Dear Tom,

It has been a long while. How are you and Elsie? How are the boys doing? I guess by now, they will be in school. I and Judy are fine and trying to cope with a new life and environment. My girls, Eloise and Lizzie seem to be coping just fine with the move. They love their new school and have long made new friends.

I ran into Jack last week at a seminar and he told me how difficult things have been for you in recent times especially after your firms recent layoffs. As we were reminiscing about old times and lamenting on how unfair life is, I told Jack a story. Please permit me to share it with you and hopefully you will learn one or two things from it as I did.

The man is named Jefferson. He married and immediately landed a prestigious job at PG laboratory. Within 10 years he grew to a managerial position. His family also grew to include 2 beautiful daughters. Life was rosy. But suddenly everything changed. First, the stock market crashed and most of his investments went with it. As he was reeling from that, his company started groaning from the general economic downturn in the country. There were talks of downsizing. On this fateful Monday, he was invited by the managing director and was informed that the firm will have to let him go. Jefferson's world collapsed. He just couldn't go home to break the news to his wife because a week before the wife had lost her job too. He just walked to a pub and drank himself to stupor. He had to be dropped off home by one of his colleagues who broke the news to his wife. He woke up the next morning to an unreal and bitter world. For 3 months, he searched in futility for a job. By the sixth month, he started despairing. He was ready to take just any odd job in other to pay for bills and escape the frequent bickering from his wife. Their marriage deteriorated that they decided to separate with the wife taking charge of the children. They had to let their house go because they couldn't continue to pay for the mortgage. For three years, Jefferson was an unhappy man who merely went through the motion of living. He even thought of ending his life but just couldn't go through with it. He worked as a janitor in an apartment building and on this day, he was as usual helping a man who lives in the building with some load. He commented on a piece of news item and a discussion ensued. The man commented on his manners and perception of events and asked why he is working as janitor instead of managing a unit in a firm. He explained that he was doing just that a few years back but lost his job. The man asked what his job role was and he explained. The man gave him a card and asked him to see him the next day which was his day off. He was reluctant and anxious at first but the next day, he summoned up courage and went to the address written on the card. When he got to the reception, he was immediately whisked away to the CEO's office. After a few questions were asked , he was asked if he would be ready to start the job as soon as possible. Did I tell you the firm he is to start work with. It is Apple and he is to start as a manager and with a 6 figure salary. He was dazed. He believed he was going to wake up and found out it was just a dream. Do you know the first thing he did when he realised that it was for real? He called his wife and went to see her immediately. He told his wife that he still loved her and will like them to start seeing a councellor. It took a lot of work to mend the marriage but today as I write, the family is back together, emotionally and financially.

Tom that is the story of my life before I knew you. Would you believe I went through all that in life? Well, I learnt these lessons. Do not give up and keep doing nice little things to everyone and cherish your family. Work on your differences. Forgive and forget. I am a happy man today. I believe things will change for the better for you. Just do not give up and keep your family close to your heart.

I'll like to hear from you soon. Please give my love to Elsie and the boys.

Best wishes

Andy

Which excerpt from The Call of the Wild best shows that Buck is entering into a new episode in his life?
And amid all this bursting, rending, throbbing of awakening life, under the blazing sun and through the soft-sighing breezes, like wayfarers to death, staggered the two men, the woman, and the huskies.
Buck made no effort. He lay quietly where he had fallen. The lash bit into him again and again, but he neither whined nor struggled. Several times Thornton started, as though to speak, but changed his mind.
This was the first time Buck had failed, in itself a sufficient reason to drive Hal into a rage. He exchanged the whip for the customary club. Buck refused to move under the rain of heavier blows which now fell upon him. Like his mates, he was barely able to get up, but, unlike them, he had made up his mind not to.
He was still limping slightly at the time he rescued Buck, but with the continued warm weather even the slight limp left him. And here, lying by the river bank through the long spring days, watching the running water, listening lazily to the songs of birds and the hum of nature, Buck slowly won back his strength.

According to Angelou's description, Vivian Baxter would consider it genius and consider the existence of an African-American president to be a victory.

Explanation:

Vivian Baxter was the mother of Maya Angelou and in her biography, Maya affirms that her mother was a strong feminist and defender of the rights of blacks, being a great inspiration for her and teaching her the bases to not feel inferior because she is black and a woman , but rather, fight it. According to this ruling, we can say that Vivian would think that the existence of an African-American president would be a victory for the black people and a great step in the fight for equality.

That way, you know they are free from harmful chemicals. Where do you start if you want to grow your own healthy food?Start with the LocationIf this is your first adventure in gardening, start small. Choose plants that are easy to tend and that will grow well in the soil you have. The soil is an important part of choosing your garden's location because the soil is what has the nutrients plants need to live. After planting, you may need to add fertilizer to the soil so that the plants form strong roots and stay healthy. You also need to choose a place that has enough space for the plants you want to grow. Not all plants grow in the same way. Consider which plants prefer sunlight and which prefer shade. This will help with picking the best spot for your garden.Planning Before PlantingOnce you have decided where you will plant your garden, you can move on to planning your garden's layout. You don't want your tall plants growing next to the shorter ones and blocking out the sun. Some plants benefit from growing near each other. For example, corn is very happy growing near peas, beans, and melons. You also want to make sure there is enough room between the rows to allow for weeding. Proper planning ensures planting success. Before You Can Eat Your VeggiesGetting your plants in good soil isn't enough to ensure food on your table. Plants also need water and additional fertilizer. They may also need supports to grow on or help against pests such as ants and caterpillars. Depending on the type of plants you choose to grow, it can be 70 days to five years before you can harvest and enjoy the fruit of your labor. Growing your own vegetables is satisfying but also takes time and dedication.Passage BSoil HorizonsSoil comes in many different forms and is made of layers called horizons. When you look at the horizons together, you get a soil profile. Each horizon has its own set of characteristics. Some soil characteristics are the amount of sand, type of minerals, and amount of decomposing leaves found in the soil. These characteristics will help determine what kind of plants can grow in the soil.Rich in NutrientsHow do nutrients make it into the soil? The answer is actually quite complex. Nutrient-rich soil contains organic matter, which is broken-down plant and animal matter. As the plant and animal matter decays, it releases nutrients into the soil. Then, it is absorbed by the roots of living plants and turned into food for the plant. Therefore, the richer the nutrients in the soil, the healthier the plant.answers:Based on the information from Passages A and B, how do nutrients in the soil help plants grow?A)Nutrients are spread from plant to plant by insects.
