The Negro Mother - Poem by Langston Hughes
1 Children, I come back today
To tell you a story of the long dark way
That I had to climb, that I had to know
In order that the race might live and grow.
5 Look at my face - dark as the night -
Yet shining like the sun with love's true light.
I am the dark girl who crossed the red sea
Carrying in my body the seed of the free.
I am the woman who worked in the field
10 Bringing the cotton and the corn to yield.
I am the one who labored as a slave,
Beaten and mistreated for the work that I gave -
Children sold away from me, I'm husband sold, too.
No safety, no love, no respect was I due.
15 Three hundred years in the deepest South:
But God put a song and a prayer in my mouth.
God put a dream like steel in my soul.
Now, through my children, I'm reaching the goal.
Now, through my children, young and free,
20 I realized the blessing deed to me.
I couldn't read then. I couldn't write.
I had nothing, back there in the night.
Sometimes, the valley was filled with tears,
But I kept trudging on through the lonely years.
25 Sometimes, the road was hot with the sun,
But I had to keep on till my work was done:
I had to keep on! No stopping for me -
I was the seed of the coming Free.
I nourished the dream that nothing could smother
30 Deep in my breast - the Negro mother.
I had only hope then, but now through you,
Dark ones of today, my dreams must come true:
All you dark children in the world out there,
Remember my sweat, my pain, my despair.
35 Remember my years, heavy with sorrow -
And make of those years a torch for tomorrow.
Make of my pass a road to the light
Out of the darkness, the ignorance, the night.
Lift high my banner out of the dust.
40 Stand like free men supporting my trust.
Believe in the right, let none push you back.
Remember the whip and the slaver's track.
Remember how the strong in struggle and strife
Still bar you the way, and deny you life -
45 But march ever forward, breaking down bars.
Look ever upward at the sun and the stars.
Oh, my dark children, may my dreams and my prayers
Impel you forever up the great stairs -
For I will be with you till no white brother
50 Dares keep down the children of the Negro Mother.

Write an short essay that makes a prediction about what will happen in the portions of Frankenstein that you haven't yet read. Your prediction must be reasonable and supported by evidence from Mary Shelley's novel and from the historical context in which the story was written. HURRY

Answer and Explanation:

Hello. As it is not possible to know how far you have reached in the book, the answer below may be inaccurate.

By reading the book to the part where the monster travels with sailors, we can make some predictions about what will happen. First, we can see that the monster has an affinity and that he likes to live with human beings, wanting to be among them and learn what they can teach. The monster can then present an idealization about what it is like to live in company with humans. This prediction is supported, mainly because the book takes place during the period of romanticism, when idealization was a frequent theme.

However, the appearance of the monsters keeps humans away from him and even if the monster is intrusive, polite and very intelligent, he will never reach the humans, since his appearance will prevent that from happening.

Your response should be about 150 words.

The objects to pick from:

Mrs. Van Daan's fur coat
Anne's pictures of movie stars and Queen Wilhelmina

Answers

Answer:

The character Mrs. Van Daan brings her fur coat with her when she is staying in the annex. The fur coat has sentimental value to her, because it connects her to her past. It symbolizes the freedom she once had, as well as her ability to possess valuable things. Her connection to the coat is emotional and materialistic. Mrs. Van Daan is maintaining her sense of dignity by having the coat as a symbol of her status, despite being forced to live in the annex. It is a refusal to admit she is no longer wealthy, and no longer has control.

Do pageants show a woman's true beauty? Pageants are too exploitative because pageants utilize the standard that judges and society have given to the definition of beauty. Most pageants promote low self-esteem, force women into specific demographics, and send the wrong message.
Many Pageants focus on makeup, hair, gowns, swimsuit modeling, and personal interviews. Despite all the makeup they wear they still might not feel beautiful. A study made by Statistic Brain Research saw that 8 of 10 underage girls that have been in pageants in the U.S. have been on a diet. Forty-two percent of the girls who were on a diet wanted to be thinner. People who entered into the pageants claimed that they are only there because they want to feel loved and beautiful, but sometimes they think less of themselves and try to change themselves hoping it will make them loved and beautiful.
Not only does it lower self-esteem but it also forces them into specific demographics. Most pageant now require a contestant to be 5’7 or taller. According to News 18 most contestants on Miss America, Miss Earth, Miss Universe, and Miss World have a waist of 60 centimeters. The average woman is 97.03 centimeters. This makes the contestant do a lot of surgery or not eat anything in a day. Not only that but 93% of all Miss USA winners have either brown or blonde hair. If a contestant has ginger or black hair they will try to change their hair color just so they can win a crown or title.
Pageants show an unrealistic view of how a person is supposed to look. Pageants also show that to be beautiful you have to have to have the perfect body, hair, make up, and the perfect smile. This shows the younger generation that someone with all those qualities is beautiful and that there is only one type of beauty. It also shows that beauty goes over intelligence and talent.
To summarize, pageants are mentally and physically draining. Pageants are based on outer appearance and not what's inside. It also allows women to second guess their beauty that they have. Pageants have harmful effects like depression, or desires to become more “beautiful”. Although pageants show confidence it does not show the whole story.
