Answer 1

Electron capture occurs when one of the electrons in the atom is captured by the atom's nucleus. The captured electron combines with one proton to form a neutron.

We have to find the nuclide that is produced when the aluminum-28 undergoes an electron capture.

If we look for the atomic number of Al in the periodic table we will see that it is 13. That means that it has 13 protons. Then we are given the atomic mass of aluminum, it is 28. That means that if we add the number of protons and the number of neutrons we get 28.

atomic mass = n° of protons + n° of neutrons = 13 + 15 = 28

atomic number = n° of protons = 13

The nucleus of the aluminum atom will capture one electron that will combine with a proton of the nucleus to form a neutron. So the atomic number will change because it will have 1 proton less. But the atomic mass won't change because we are losing one proton but winning a neutron, so it remains the same. After the electron capture, the new nuclide will have:

atomic mass nuclide = n° of protons + n° of neutrons = 12 + 16 = 28

atomic number nuclide = n° of protons = 12

If we look for the element that has an atomic number of 12 in the periodic table we will see that it is magnesium.

Finally we can express this like a reaction:

28 0 28

Al + e --------> Mg

13 -1 12

Answer:

Potassium persulfate was used in photography to remove the last traces of hypo from photographic papers and plates, A 0,8162 g sample was found to contain 0,2361 g of potassium, 0.1936 g of sulfur, and the rest was oxygen. The formula weight of this compound was measured to be 270. What are the empirical and molecular formulas of this compound?

Answers

Answer:

Molecular formula = KSO4.

Empirical formula = K2S2O4.

Explanation:

What is given?

Mass of K (potassium) = 0.2361 g.

Mass of S (sulfur) = 0.1936 g.

Mass of O (oxygen) = 0.8162 g - 0.2361 g - 0.1936 g = 0.3865 g.

Molar mass of K = 39.1 g/mol.

Molar mass of S = 32 g/mol.

Molar mass of O = 16 g/mol.

Weight of compound = 270 g/mol.

Step-by-step solution:

Remember that empirical formulas show the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound, and molecular formulas show the number of each type of atom in a molecule. So first, let's see what would be the molecular formula:

Let's find the number of moles of each element using its molar mass:

[tex]\begin{gathered} 0.2361\text{ g K}\cdot\frac{1\text{ mol K}}{39.1\text{ g K}}=0.006038\text{ moles K,} \\ 0.1936\text{ g S}\cdot\frac{1\text{ mol S}}{32\text{g S}}=0.006050\text{ moles S,} \\ 0.3865\text{ g O}\cdot\frac{1\text{ mol O}}{16\text{ g O}}=0.02416\text{ moles O.} \end{gathered}[/tex]

The next step is to divide each number of moles obtained by the least number of moles, in this case, the least number is 0.006038:

[tex]\begin{gathered} 0.006038\text{ moles K/0.006038=1 mol K,} \\ 0.006050\text{ moles S/0.006038 =}1.001\text{ moles S}\approx1\text{ mol S,} \\ 0.02416\text{ moles O/0.006038=4.001 moles O}\approx\text{4 moles O.} \end{gathered}[/tex]

Our molecular formula would contain 1 mol of K, 1 mol of S, and 4 moles of O, so it would be KSO4.

But remember that we need to find the empirical formula too, based on the molecular weight. In the statement, they're telling us that the molecular weight is 270 g/mol, but the molecular weight of KSO4 is 135 g/mol (you can calculate it using the given molar masses and by doing an algebraic sum). So, to obtain the empirical formula with 270 g/mol as molecular weight, we have to multiply by two each number of moles of the compound (135 g/mol * 2 = 270 g/mol):

[tex]\begin{gathered} 1\text{ mol K}\cdot2=2\text{ moles K,} \\ 1\text{ mol S}\cdot2=2\text{ moles S,} \\ 4\text{ moles O }\cdot2=8\text{ moles O.} \end{gathered}[/tex]

So, you can realize that K2S2O4 would be the empirical formula because its molecular weight would be 270 g/mol.

Molecular formula = KSO4.

Empirical formula = K2S2O4.

What is ac Chemical Equation?Chemical formulas and symbols are used in chemical equations to depict a chemical reaction symbolically. A plus sign is placed between each entity in the reactants and products, and an arrow pointing in the direction of the products indicates the direction in which the reaction is taking place. The reactant entities are listed on the left and the product entities on the right. Chemical equations can be interspersed with structural (pictorial diagrams), symbolic, or both types of formulations. The absolute values of the stoichiometric numbers are represented by the coefficients placed next to the symbols and formulas of the entities.An arrow symbol, a series of reactants (the chemicals used to initiate the chemical reaction), and a list of products (the substances created during the chemical reaction) make up a chemical equation. Each substance is described by its chemical formula, which is sometimes followed by a figure known as the stoichiometric coefficient.

Therefore,

The chemical equation will be written as:

2C2H6 + 7O2    → 6H2O + 4CO2

The Law of Conservation of Mass provides the foundation for balancing chemical equations. Stoichiometric coefficients must be added to products and reactants in order to balance the chemical equations. This is essential because all chemical equations must adhere to the laws of constant proportions and mass conservation, which dictate that the product side and reactant side of the equation must have the same number of atoms of each element.

The assignment about the Public Service Announcement (PSA) describing the environmental impacts due to ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect is given below.

Since we live in a modern industrialized world, we need to get exposed to lots of chemicals and pollutants. With modernization people began to use Air conditioners, Refrigerants, and other household appliances for a sophisticated lifestyle without knowing the harmful effects it causes on the environment.

The use of Refrigerators and Air Conditioners contains Freons which are used as aerosol propellants. These freons release CFCs which are called as Chloro-Fluro-Carbons which are the main element responsible for damaging the environment by causing both global warming and Ozone depletion.

The Chlorine atom that is released from the CFCs breaks the bond of the Ozone. The reaction is elucidated below:

ClO + O -------> Cl + O₂

This breaks the bond of Ozone creating Ozone depletion and eventually leading to Global Warming.

Similar to Ozone depletion, another main environmental problem is the greenhouse effect which is occurring mainly due to the release of harmful gases from automobiles, and industries such as CO₂, SO₂, etc... These gases absorb and trap the solar heat from the Infrared region and creates a greenhouse effect. These gases are called greenhouse gases.

This greenhouse effect, ozone depletion eventually leads to an increase in global temperature and results in the rising of sea levels by melting the glaciers and icebergs. The climatic pattern is adversely affected. This would affect agriculture, as well as the health of humans as harmful UV rays that enter the earth due to ozone depletion, will lead to skin  diseases, cancer, and so on.

By adversely affecting the agriculture and health of the world, there would be a drop in the entire economy as our country is dependent mainly on agriculture for the nation's economy.

The effects of these could be minimized by using public transport, planting trees, using refrigerators and air conditioners free from freons, and proper treatment of the wastes eliminated from industries must be ensured.

The theoretical yield, in grams, of CO₂ is 93.97g having molar mass 44g

What is molar mass ?

The "counting unit" used by chemists to describe the quantity of atoms, ions, molecules, or formula units in a specific chemical sample is called a mole. The mole is comparable to other counting units you have employed in the past, such as pair (2), dozen (12), and gross (144). Avogadro's number (6.022 x 1023) of molecules (or formula units) make up one mole of a substance (ionic compound). The mass of 1 mole of a chemical is indicated by its molar mass. It provides you with the amount of grammes per mole of a substance, to put it another way. Therefore, grams/mole are the units for molar mass.

2C2H2 + 5O2=====> 4CO2+2H2O

Molar Mass of C2H2 = 2*12+2*2 = 28g = 1 mol

2 mol of C2H2 = 28*2 = 56g

Molar Mass of  CO2 = 12+2*16 = 44g = 1 mol

We need to find the Initial temperature of the argon represented as T1

We Know that, In ideal gas law: PV = nRT

It can be written as, P1V1 / T1 = P2V2 / T2

(0.92 * 4.95) / T1 = (0.092 * 5.7) / 303.15

4.554 / T1 = 0.5244 / 303.15

4.554 / T1 = 0.0017

T1 = 4.554 / 0.0017

T1 = 2678 K

How many coulombs of charge are needed to produce 53.5 mol of solid zinc?

Answers

The charge of 10,325,500 coulombs is needed to produce 53.5 mol of solid zinc.

What is the coulomb charge?

The coulomb is the unit of electric charge in the International System of units and is represented by 'C'. In the S.I., it is equal to the electric charge delivered by a 1-ampere constant current in 1 second and to elementary charges, about 6.2×10¹⁸ e.

The coulomb in terms of the ampere and second can be described as 1 C = 1 A × 1 s. The SI base units fixed the numerical value of the elementary charge expressed in coulombs.

Solid zinc can be formed by chemical reactions:

Zn²⁺  +  2e⁻   →  Zn (s)

One mole of zinc is produced by using two moles of electrons.

One mole of electrons is equal to one faraday electricity.

Then, the total electrons required = 2×53.5 = 107 F

The charge (in coulombs) on one mole of electrons = 96500 C

Amount of charge required to form zinc = 96500 × 107 = 10,325,500 C

Introduction

Water is a molecule that composed of chemical elements oxygen and hydrogen. Waterrogen. Water behaves differently than other substances, this is because water can be changed from being a solid to liquid or a gas (vapour). This is known as changing state of matter. Water is a liquid at room temperature, however, it becomes a solid when the temperature is cooled down. The same water can turn into vapour or gas if it is heated up to a certain temperature. Therefore the state of water depends on the temperature.

Solid water

At a temperature below or equal to zero degrees Celsius, the water molecule turns to be a solid (ice), this is called freezing. At this state the water molecules are packed close together, this prevents water from changing its shape, thus, the atoms in solid water are not active, even when ice is removed from its container, it retains its shape. Water in its solid state has a very regular pattern whereby the water molecules are apart from one another and are connected by hydrogen bonds which forms a crystalline lattice. These crystals have a number of open regions and pockets which makes ice less dense than liquid water. This is the main reason ice floats on water. In the solid state, there is not enough thermal energy to overcome the intermolecular forces (hydrogen bonding), thus particles vibrate around fixed axes.

Liquid water

When the ice is warmed from its freezing point, the water molecule changes from solid to liquid water, when the temperature is higher than zero but lower than 100 degrees Celsius. This process is called melting. The attractive forces between the water molecules weaken and individual molecules begin to move around each other, but they are still attracted to each other. Since liquid water molecules can move around, this state can take the shape of its container. The spacing of liquid water molecules per unit volume are actually smaller than it is for solid water, which means liquid water is more denser than solid water. Liquid water have no definite shape, however, has a definite volume.

Gas water

The third state of water is its gaseous state. In this state water molecules move freely and rapidly because they are not bound together. The change form liquid to vapour or gas is called vaporization, this process occurs at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius. Gas water molecules have no definite shape, nor definite volume. Particles or atoms move randomly and are less attracted to each other. Gas water molecules are highly compressible.

Conclusion

Water exists in three forms or states. These include solid, liquid and gaseous states. Water is a liquid at room temperature, whereas it is a solid at temperatures below or equal to zero. When the water is heated up to 100 degrees Celsius, it turns to a gaseous state.

Chen has a toy car and wants to find out which surface will allow the car to move the fastest. He plans to push the car on carpet, wood, and bricks. predict which surface the toy car will move the fastest on and why

Answers

Answer:

The car will most likely move the fastest on the wood. Carpet will create drag due to the friction between the car's wheels and the carpet. Bricks are not smooth so drag will occur, however it will be minimal. Wood is usually smooth and there is almost no drag or friction...the car will glide easily over the surface.

True or false; The amount of energy required to heat 10 grams of water by 15 degreesCelsius is greater than that required to heat 10 grams of aluminum from15 degrees Celsius.

Answers

To answer this question we have to compare the specific heats of each substance.

The specific heat of a substance is the amount of energy required to make 1 gram of a substance increase its temperature by 1 °C. The greater the specific heat of a substance the more energy it will be required to heat it up.

The specific heat of water is 4.18J/g°C and the specific heat of aluminum is 0.897J/g°C.

It means that the amount of energy required to heat water is greater than the one to heat aluminum.

It means that the answer is TRUE.

Kinect-molecular theory hypothesis:

- The formation of a gas occurs by a large number of molecules;

- Gas molecules have a negligible dimension, which means that the volume occupied by them is very small, almost insignificant;

- These gases move in a discontinuous and random way, thus occupying the entire volume of the container where they are found, having a rectilinear and uniformly varied movement;

- They are independent, they only interact with each other when a collision occurs;

- Collisions between molecules and molecules and between molecules and container walls are elastic collisions, which cause the kinetic energy of the molecules to remain constant.
