What was the dust bowl about?

The Dust Bowl was the moniker given to the drought-stricken southern plains region of the United States during the 1930s, which saw catastrophic dust storms. People and cattle were murdered and crops failed across the region when severe winds and suffocating dust blasted the country from Texas to Nebraska.

The Dust Bowl was caused by a combination of economic distress, protracted drought, exceptionally high temperatures, poor farming techniques, and wind erosion. The Dust Bowl's seeds may have been sown in the early 1920s.

Read the Expert below then answer the following questions.

THE DUST BOWL by Jessica McBirney

On the afternoon of April 14, 1935, young Irene Thompson looked up in horror. A huge black cloud that covered the sky was racing toward

her. It wasn’t a thunderstorm, and it wasn’t smoke — it was dust. Before Irene could do anything, the flying dirt became so thick that she

could not find any of the buildings on her own farm. She later remembered, “They called it the Black Sunday. And some people actually thought the world was coming to an end.” Another man

recalled, “It looked like a wall of dirt coming at us — 500 to 1,000 feet high.”

Black Sunday was one of the worst dust storms in American history, during a time known as the Dust Bowl. However, it was definitely not the only storm. For almost 10 straight years, between 1930 and 1940, high winds and terrible dust storms destroyed most of the farms and towns in the Great Plains, a region of flat lands that runs through the central United States.

One-third of the Great Plains suffered from severe dust storms during the Dust Bowl. The storms covered 100 million acres across Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Kansas. In the worst storms, the dust in the air became so thick that people could not see more than a few feet in front of them. They had to wear masks and cover their faces with handkerchiefs just to breathe outside.

Several factors caused the Dust Bowl. In the 1920s, the central U.S. had more rain than usual, and agriculture boomed. New immigrants moved to the Great Plains states seeking to start their own successful farms. However, they did not practice environmentally-friendly farming techniques. They made two big mistakes. First, in order to plant as much wheat as possible, they plowed over all of the natural prairie grasses that kept the topsoil in place. Second, they planted crops too often, instead of giving the soil a break every now and then. As long as the rain kept falling, neither of these mistakes caused problems.

But in 1930, the rain stopped coming. The soil became dry, loose, and unable to support crops. This drought would have been bad enough for farmers, but then strong winds picked up across the Great Plains. Those winds picked up all of the dry soil and sent it flying. People called these strong dust storms “black blizzards,” which could sometimes last for one or two days straight.

Farming families realized they could not stay in the Great Plains. Their houses and belongings were always dirty; the dust blew into their lungs and made them sick; and their farms were unproductive.

They could not afford to stay. Thousands of families packed up their lives and moved west to find work. Immigrants from the Plains were called Okies because most came from Oklahoma. Many headed

all the way to California because they heard California had good agricultural jobs. However, the whole United States was suffering from an economic crisis, and California’s farms did not have room for

many new workers. Okies did manage to get away from the thick dust storms, but they could not escape unemployment and poverty.

PART A: Which statement identifies the central idea of the text?

A) Farmers aggressively harvested the land in the Great Plains, despite warnings from environmentalists that it could result in dust storms.

B) There was nothing that farmers could have done to prevent the Dust Bowl, as they merely chose the wrong time and place to farm.

C) Farmers' treatment of the land weakened it against the elements and resulted in dust storms that negatively impacted life  in the Great Plains.

D) The Dust Bowl negatively impacted life for everyone in America, as dust spread beyond the Great Plains and farmers couldn't produce crops.

Write a formal persuasive e-mail to a community leader to address a social concern

Answer: Dear community leader,

I understand that we need to use our cars for transportation. But the biggest problem in our community is pollution. Pollution damages our trees and we need our trees in order to breath. Pollution can also affect our lungs. Now I'm not saying to make driving illegal. But if you live close to somewhere and your able to walk there it isn't right to drive there because that is causing more pollution. I understand if someone is going to the grocery store you can't walk with all the groceries but if you are going to a close ice cream shop you don't need to drive and walking is good for people so it's a win-win.

Ashley is writing an essay about John F. Kennedy's 1963 State of the Union address. She finds the following quotation from a credible source to include in her essay.

"Our economic health depends on healthy transportation arteries; and I believe the way to a more modern, economical choice of national transportation service is through increased competition and decreased regulation. Local mass transit, faring even worse, is as essential a community service as hospitals and highways. Nearly three-fourths of our citizens live in urban areas, which occupy only 2 percent of our land—and if local transit is to survive and relieve the congestion of these cities, it needs Federal stimulation and assistance" (Kennedy, 1963).

Which two statements demonstrate correct paraphrasing of the quotation?

The economy is dependent on the health of our transportation system. This system is just as important of a community service as hospitals and highways. Most of our citizens live in urban areas, which occupy about 2 percent of our country. If these cities are to survive, they need Federal aid and assistance (Kennedy, 1963).
The economic health of our country depends on a healthy transportation system and I propose that a way to have a more modern transportation service is to increase competition and remove regulations. Almost three-fourth of us live in cities and in order for local transit to survive, they will need our help (Kennedy, 1963).
The health of our economy is dependent on the health of our national transportation arteries. More economical choices can be achieved through increased competition and decreased regulation. Three-fourths of our citizens live in cities and government aid is needed to help relieve the congestion in these areas (Kennedy, 1963).
The current assessment of our economy reveals that there is a need for improvements to our transit system and the removal of regulatory restrictions placed upon this system. Public transportation is just as important as other public services, affects a majority of our citizens, and is in dire need of governmental aid (Kennedy, 1963).

“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—

Good morning everyone. Respected teachers and my seniors and juniors. Today, I will be speaking on the topic “failures are the stepping stones to success”.

Failure and success run hand in hand. One succeeds while the other fails. It  is a part of life which we live. Not everyone wins and not everyone fails. We might fail today but there will be another chance tomorrow but we should never give up on anything. Our biggest failure will be to ‘give up’. Giving up should never be an option. If something is hard, we need to fight twice as hard against it. Failure gives us experience and leaves room for improvement so that the next time we do the same thing, we know we won’t repeat our past mistakes which will lead us towards success. We never have a last chance. Life is full of chances, opportunities and unexpected miracles. We just need to have a little faith and effort to fight for success. Lastly, I would like to conclude my speech by saying,"Try, try, try but never cry".

Now in these subterranean caverns lived a strange race of beings, called by some gnomes, by some kobolds, by some goblins. There was a legend current in the country that at one time they lived above ground, and were very like other people. But for some reason or other, concerning which there were different legendary theories, the king had laid what they thought too severe taxes upon them, or had required observances of them they did not like, or had begun to treat them with more severity in some way or other, and impose stricter laws; and the consequence was that they had all disappeared from the face of the country. According to the legend, however, instead of going to some other country, they had all taken refuge in the subterranean caverns, whence they never came out but at night, and then seldom showed themselves in any numbers, and never to many people at once. It was only in the least frequented and most difficult parts of the mountains that they were said to gather even at night in the open air. . . . Which detail from go jonglin best explains why Glen receives unexpected instructions about releasing the retro pack

Answers

The detail from "Go, John Glenn" that best indicates why he was asked to let the Retro Pack be was because the Retro Pack was faulty. See further explanation below.

Why was Glen asked to leave the Retro Pack in place?

It was most likely a bad signal. In such a situation, the retrorocket package, which was fastened by three straps attached to the capsule's base, would be the only thing holding the heat shield in place.

When the retrorockets were launched to decelerate Friendship 7 out of orbit, the retropack would be ejected, the heat shield would fall free, and when temperatures outside the capsule reached 9,500 degrees during reentry, John Glenn would be incinerated.

The only answer appears to be to leave the retropack connected during reentry. This was th e reason why he received instructions to leave the retro pack be.
