Now, Zeus, the lord of cloud roused in the north
a storm against the ships, and driving veils
of the squall moved down like night on land and sea.
The bows went plunging at the gust; sails
cracked and lashed outstrips in the big wind.
We saw death in that fury, dropped the yards,
unshipped the oars, and pulled for the nearest lee:
then two long days and nights we lay offshore
worn out and sick at heart, tasting our grief,
until a third Dawn came with ringlets shining.

Read the excerpt from "Everest Then and Now."

The first attempt to climb Everest was made by British climbers George Mallory and Guy Bullock in 1921. The pair did not make it to the top of the mountain, nor did the many who made attempts in the several decades that followed. A strange and ambitious quest occurred in 1933. A British millionaire named Lady Houston funded a mission involving a formation of British aircraft that flew over the peak of Everest. Their plan was to drop the British flag on the summit of the mountain. It was the first flight over Everest, but not the first journey to the peak by foot. The first climbers to summit Everest were New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a local climber from Nepal. A handful of other climbers made a few more successful summits in the decade that followed. On May 1, 1963, Jim Whittaker was the first American to stand atop Everest and look down at the clouds.

The tragedy "Macbeth" is the only one in Shakespeare, which depicts the transformation of a noble man into a villain. Macbeth was first a brave warrior, a faithful vassal of his king Duncan. But ambition creeps into his soul, a thirst for power. These feelings push him to a crime - the assassination of the king and the usurpation of the throne.

The work was created in the classic staged genre, which is achieved by piling up scenes, an expanded system of images and the dynamic development of the plot. This became the reason for the high popularity of the work. From the time of Shakespeare to the present day, the Macbeth tragedy has been included in the repertoires of theaters around the world, and numerous screen versions of the work are also known.

G. R. Elliot once said, “wicked intention must in the end produce wicked action unless it is not merely revoked by the protagonist’s better feelings, but entirely eradicated by his inmost will, aided by Divine grace. ” This statement can be directly applied to Macbeth’s descent into the darker recesses of human nature and what human weaknesses this classical tragic figure struggles with and finally succumbs to, causing his downfall. In William Shakespeare’s famous play, Macbeth is drawn to the murder of King Duncan, Banquo, and Fleance by his yearning for power.

How could such a ourageous, gentle man such as Macbeth suddenly be transformed and drawn to do such evil? Surely he did not come up with such villainous thoughts of his own. His desire for control, authority, and jurisdiction was strengthened by evil sources, those from both the witches’ prophecies and his wife’s encouragement. In Macbeth it is very clear that evil begets evil. Shakespeare focuses on Macbeth’s courage early in the play. For example, Duncan and the sergeant both compliment Macbeth’s mental and physical bravery in Act I, Scene II.

Macbeth “carv’d out his passage” until he and the enemy eneral were face to face. In the same act, the reader is told that Macbeth is brave because of his “disdaining Fortune. ” In addition to his quality of courage, Macbeth is also a gentle man. Demonstrating his love and devotion for his wife, Macbeth refers to her as “his dearest partner of greatness” in Act I, Scene V. Lady Macbeth views his kindness as somewhat of a problem for their quest for power. She says that Macbeth is “too full o’ the milk of human kindness” to place them on the throne of Scotland as a result of murder.

Macbeth realizes that Duncan is, n fact, a good and humble king, and other than to fulfill self-centered, uncontrolled ambitions, this is not reason to murder him. Macbeth is soon pressured into the murder of Duncan by both his wife and the three witches. The three witches are supernatural instruments of fate who predicted that Macbeth will become King of Scotland.

In act I, scene III, the witches chant, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! / All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! / All hail, Macbeth! That shalt be King hereafter! When Macbeth hears this prophecy, many questions instantly begin to run through his head. He begins to wonder, what are they talking about and how will I become king? Macbeth does not entirely trust the witches, for he does identify them with evil. The foretelling of the witches spark the plot of the murder. The spark becomes a flame when Lady Macbeth hears of the prophecy. Lady Macbeth is canny and masterful as she propels Macbeth to kill Duncan. She binds Macbeth’s attention to the throne of Scotland, but never to the severity of the crime.

Lady Macbeth is clever when she constantly urges Macbeth to forget about his torments and the brutal death he has aused. Before the actual murder, Macbeth is shrouded with fear. Banquo can also see the fear in Macbeth, although he does not know about the plan of murder when he asks, “Good sir, why do you start, and seem to fear/ Things that do sound so fair? ” He ponders what would happen if he fails, and discusses this possibility with his wife. He struggles with fear in the presence of Lady Macbeth but she constantly reassures him that there is nothing to fear and that the murder will be for the better.

This fear demonstrates that Macbeth does realize the difference between right and rong, good and evil, and the consequences, but the outcome, which is murder, proves he can be swayed in his beliefs and concerns. Macbeth was pressured to do a horrible deed which was driven by evil. The beginning of the evil was rooted in his wife and the witch’s but quickly spread into his mind and heart. Macbeth was soon contaminated by evil, although he realized what he had done was wrong. Macbeth says, “To know my deed, ’twere best not know myself,” meaning that committing such a vile act makes him uncomfortable.

Explanation:

Music can be censored in many ways. Musicians can be restricted in the songs they play in public. They can be banned from performing in certain venues. Total censorship of recorded music can be achieved by banning certain music from stores, radio, or the Internet. Songs can be altered to conceal portions considered forbidden. One argument for censorship is that it protects impressionable people from explicit content or ideas deemed immoral. A July 2015 article on Connect US: The Global Issues Blog lists this reason as the number one censorship argument: "By regulating the songs which are being played on the airways," the author said, "people, especially teens, will not be exposed to lyrics that have profanities and violent overtones." Censorship is a cocoon. Another argument for censorship is that it regulates the music industry. The idea is that music producers encourage artists to create offensive songs, which become popular and increase earnings. Music censorship forces music producers to eliminate offensive material and keep the profits rolling in. Censoring music limits intolerance, some say. Writing for the Vision Launch website, Crystal Lombardo explained this notion in her February 2016 article. "Sometimes, music targets a certain individual or society and disrespects them," she wrote. "With censorship, the youth can better discern between what’s right and what’s wrong." Yet another argument for censorship concerns violence. Here, the reasoning is that if music glorifies violence, then it might incite children and even adults to act violently. People who do not want music censored argue that it shackles artistic expression. It restrains the ability of song writers and singers to express their creativity and promote social change. Opponents to music censorship also claim that songs with controversial content provide a useful purpose. The music challenges individuals to think. People should be free to hear new ideas and then decide whether the ideas are valuable to them. Another criticism of censorship is that it destroys an individual’s freedom by imposing the censor’s views. A person should be able to listen to whatever song he or she wants to hear. That person can decide if the song is offensive. In her Vision Launch article, Lombardo offers a related problem with censorship. "Some artists have had their songs censored because the lyrics were interpreted in a bad way," she said. Here is one example of misinterpretation. Phil Collins’ 1981 hit, "In the Air Tonight," has been banned from the airwaves at least twice. Once in 1991 due to a supposed connection to the Persian Gulf War and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Yet, the song is not political. Lingering tension from a recent divorce inspired Collins to write the song. But surely the most prominent proof: the song was written many years before either event even occurred! side note:Madonna has often been censored for religious controversy and being too racy. Snoop Dogg has been censored for everything from personal physical fights to profanity, drugs, and guns. John Lennon (along with The Beatles) was censored for anti-war themes and drugs. If anything, censorship seems to increase artists’ popularity even though it dampens their artistic expressions. Which ONE claim from Passage 2 is BEST supported with relevant and sufficient evidence from the text? A Censorship regulates the music industry. B Censorship makes it difficult for artists to express themselves. C Music lyrics that include violence may cause violent behaviors in those who listen to it. D Incorrect interpretation of music lyrics leads to wrongful censorship. The author of Passage 2 claims that "Censorship is a cocoon." Which ONE sentence from Passage 1 BEST supports this claim? A "These rights ensured liberties by limiting the government’s ability to interfere with citizens’ lives." B "A person is free to decide if an idea is worthwhile without pressure from government officials to choose one idea over another." C "They can erect the barbed wire fence of censorship whether others consider it right or wrong." D "The music had to be clean and free of profanity, which was somewhat of a Green Day hallmark."

Answers

ONE sentence from Passage 1 which BEST supports this claim about "Censorship is a cocoon." is:

What is Censorship?

This refers to the restriction of certain material based on their perceived loaded content in order to protect certain consumers.

With this in mind, the music censorship was described in detail and the incorrect censorship of a certain song was quoted because it was said to contain political messages when in fact the singer was talking about his recent divorce.

The first Pepsi-Cola was created by Caleb D. Bradham (1866–1934), a pharmacist in New Bern, North Carolina. Hoping to duplicate the recent success of Coca-Cola, Bradham named his sweet cola-flavoured carbonated beverage Pepsi-Cola in 1898. The drink proved so popular that in 1902 Bradham incorporated the Pepsi-Cola Company. After many years of moderate prosperity, the company fell on hard times after World War I and was reorganized and reincorporated on several occasions in the 1920s.

In 1931 the company’s trademark and assets were picked up by Charles G. Guth (1876–1948), founder of the modern Pepsi-Cola. He established a new Pepsi-Cola Company, had a chemist formulate a better drink, set up new bottling operations, and began merchandising a hugely successful 12-ounce bottle for five cents. Guth was also president of Loft, Incorporated, a candy manufacturer and soda-fountain chain (founded 1919), and in legal battles in 1936–39 he lost controlling interest in the Pepsi-Cola Company to the new management of Loft. When in 1941 the Pepsi-Cola Company was merged into Loft, the name Loft, Inc., was changed to Pepsi-Cola Company
