Answers

Answer 1
Jallianwala bagh massacre

On April 13, the traditional festival of Baisakhi, thousands of Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus gathered in the Jallianwalla Bagh (garden) near the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. An hour after the meeting began as scheduled at 4:30 pm,

General Dyer--without warning the crowd to disperse-blocked the main exits. He explained later that this act "was not to disperse the meeting but to punish the Indians for disobedience." Dyer ordered his troops to begin shooting toward the densest sections of the crowd (including women and children). Firing continued for approximately ten minutes. Many people died in stampedes at the narrow gates or by jumping into the solitary well on the compound to escape the shooting. A plaque in the monument at the site, set up after independence, says that 120 bodies were pulled out of the well. The wounded could not be moved from where they had fallen, as a curfew was declared; and many more died during the night.

What were the federal fugitive slave laws?

The federal fugitive slave laws were a set of laws enacted by the United States Congress in 1793 and 1850. These laws required citizens to assist in the capture and return of escaped slaves to their owners.

The laws authorized slave owners and their agents to enter free states to recapture escaped slaves, and imposed fines and imprisonment on anyone who aided escaped slaves or refused to assist in their capture.

The laws were deeply controversial and sparked significant opposition from abolitionists in the North, who saw them as a violation of their own civil liberties and a betrayal of the values of the American Revolution.

The laws also created political tensions between the North and South in the decades leading up to the American Civil War.

Answer:

After World War I, people needed to let loose in the 1920s (Roaring Twenties). Because drinking was outlawed under the 18th amendment, people founded speakeasies, which were venues to buy illegal drinks. More Americans lived in cities than in small towns. Jazz was becoming increasingly popular, and Harlem was dubbed the "Jazz Capital of the World." Women began to trim their hair and wear shorter skirts. They were known as flappers, or vamps if they were more intense. Buying on margin became popular, with "buy now, pay later," and the radio was the most popular item at the period. The KKK was extremely powerful at the time, with up to 4 million members, and it was the most powerful in the Midwest and South. People were also quite interested in aviation. Admiral Byrd was the first to fly over the South Pole, while Charles Lindberg was the first to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover were all Republicans who served as presidents during this time period. The happy times of the 1920s came to an end with the 1929 stock market crash.

explain the evolution of power in ancient Greece from a monarchy to an oligarchy to tyranny to a democracy.

Answers

The four most common systems of Greek government were:

Democracy - rule by the people (male citizens).

Monarchy - rule by an individual who had inherited his role.

Oligarchy - ruled by a select group of individuals.

Tyranny - rule by an individual who had seized power by unconstitutional means.

How did Greece go from monarchy to oligarchy?

The monarchy was eliminated in most ancient Greek city-states by 800 B.C. and replaced with an oligarchy -- ruled by a privileged class of landowning aristocrats and wealthy merchants.

How and why did tyranny occur in Greece?

Greek Tyrants

A tyrant was the leader of tyranny, just as a monarch ruled the monarchy

In the year 507 B.C., the Athenian leader Cleisthenes introduced a system of political reforms that he called demokratia, or “rule by the people” (from demos, “the people,” and Kratos, or “power”). It was the first known democracy in the world

Understand a geographic features the two different population distributions (why do people live in one area over another?) use the Sahara desert as an example.

Answers

Answer:

Deserts are areas that receive very little precipitation. People often use the adjectives “hot,” “dry,” and “empty” to describe deserts, but these words do not tell the whole story. Although some deserts are very hot, with daytime temperatures as high as 54°C (130°F), other deserts have cold winters or are cold year-round. And most deserts, far from being empty and lifeless, are home to a variety of plants, animals, and other organisms. People have adapted to life in the desert for thousands of years.

One thing all deserts have in common is that they are arid, or dry. Most experts agree that a desert is an area of land that receives no more than 25 centimeters (10 inches) of precipitation a year. The amount of evaporation in a desert often greatly exceeds the annual rainfall. In all deserts, there is little water available for plants and other organisms.
