French was merged with Old English by the _____.
Danes
Normans
Saxons

Answers

Answer:

Normans.

Explanation:

Old English was a language almost entirely Germanic, including the language spoken by the old Vikings who spoke Old Norse. Moreover, the spelling of old English is almost purely phonetic, consisting of a simple two tense, and a verb system of three singular and one plural form.

But with the Norman conquest, they intermarried with the English, resulting in a mixture of the languages spoken by the Norman Danes and the English. This resulted in the merging of the Old English with the Norman's Old French.

Thus, the correct answer is Normans.

What we learn in school is different for all of us, but it is meant to provide skills and information that serves as a base for almost any career or life path. Although this is the idea behind education, the system doesn’t fully serve this purpose. It provides students with a concrete base of knowledge, but doesn’t really prepare them for meaningful work in the real world.

South junior Tiger Worku said, “Our education system wasn’t founded on teaching kids… how to be the next leaders of our society. It was founded to teach kids discipline and obedience.”

Many of the skills that we learn in school such as critical thinking, writing, speaking publicly, and the ability to discuss important topics in groups are very useful for careers in the real world, but much of the content we learn is often times not.

The skills we learn are useful for almost any career and in daily life. For example, you have to use writing skills when writing a formal email and when communicating professionally. Formal communication skills are also necessary for making calls, participating in meetings, conducting interviews, and much more in the working world. This is another use of the skills we gain through school.

Critical thinking is an especially important skill that schools teaches. It is applicable to almost all jobs, especially those that require problem solving. In addition, critical thinking is extremely useful when forming political and social opinions, which shape our world and laws. It challenges us to reexamine the lens through which we’ve grown up seeing the world by learning different perspectives and stepping out of societal norms. English teacher Mary Manor explained that “critical thinking [is] paramount — not just for “21st century jobs” but so that the workers of the world can consider their plight and begin to organize against the ruling classes… We are a country that can support billions, but we are instead pandering to billionaires. Only when we exercise our skills in analysis and synthesis — critical thinking — will we be able to come together as a nation and demand equity for all.”

However, in school we don’t always learn why these skills are important. We are mainly just given tasks in school without much explanation about how we will use them throughout the rest of our lives. For example, we learn how to do theoretical problems in math, but they often don’t connect to real life applications students care about.

While skills are useful, the content is often times not. For example, knowing the date of a certain historical event has no bearing on most career paths. While some historical knowledge is necessary for forming our ideas about the world, much of the specific information simply is not. Knowing the details and specifics of many subjects can be easily accessed online.

Schools do not prepare students for the real world because the education structure of the schools is not based on practical scenario, it is based on theoretical knowledge of the books.

What is Education?

The education is a discipline that is concerned with methods of teaching and learning in schools or school-like environments as opposed to various non-formal and informal means of socialization (e.g., rural development projects and education through parent-child relationships).

Education can be thought of as the transmission of the values and accumulated knowledge of a society. In this sense, it is equivalent to what social scientists term socialization or enculturation.

The education is designed to guide them in learning a culture, molding their behavior in the ways of adulthood, and directing them toward their eventual role in society.

from President John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address, 1961
from President John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address, 1961

…In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.

Now the trumpet summons us again—not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are—but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle, year in and year out, "rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation"—a struggle against the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease, and war itself.

Can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, North and South, East and West, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? Will you join in that historic effort?

In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility—I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it—and the glow from that fire can truly light the world.

And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.

Kennedy's speech implies that if people will fight for freedom and justice, their government will do the same. Which sentence best aligns with this idea?

"Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you."
"In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than in mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course."
"In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger."

When she finally emerged from underground, she got to the sidewalk and looked at the landscape. She was used to flatness and green; the farm that theyd just sold had cattle grazing as far as the eye could see. There was nothing green in sight here as cement behemoths sprung out of the ground taller than the stalks of corn back in Iowa. People zipped in front of her with briefcases tucked to their sides as high heels clacked on the pavement. It was all so overwhelming, so loud, and Hattie put her hands over her ears to shut out the sounds of the taxi horns and the thousand different conversations. Her little sister Evelyn didnt; she was trying to take it all in.Her mother pulled out a map from her purse and held it in shaky hands. According to this, our new home should be right here. Hattie traced her mothers index finger to a building that was so high that she had to crane her neck to see the top. This? Evelyn gasped. Her father, the man who was never at a loss for words, didnt say anything. He adjusted the weight of the three bags that contained most of the possessions theyd been able to bring on the three-hour plane journey that had uprooted them from their old lives and deposited them in New York City. Her father struggled to open the heavy front door, and when they were inside, the smell of hundreds of different meals clashed in her nose: spaghetti, fried chicken, fish, and curry. They stood in front of a bank of elevators as Evelyn pushed the button for the seventeenth floor. When they entered what would be their new home, Hattie spun around in tiny circles as her father gave them the grand tour. Here is where you and Evelyn will sleep, he announced. He pointed to a room that was half the size of the Iowa bedroom that was hers alone, the same Iowa bedroom where shed had all her sleepovers and whose walls still showcased the crayon scribbles from when she was a toddler. Shed tried to scrub them clean, but they were more stubborn than she was, so they would be there for the new family that would be moving in soon.Evelyn tried to sound excited. We get to share a room!Hattie was grateful for her younger sister, for the way that she could always look at the bright side of things. Hattie couldnt say anything in responseshed been speechless for most of the trip. Instead, she followed her father down the hallway that was narrow enough for one person to fit through, maybe two if they squeezed shoulder to shoulder. And here is where your mom and I will be. She could hear the forced excitement in her fathers voice for a move that he didnt want to make either. But theyd had to sell the farm, and when this opportunity presented itself, there had really been no choice. The tour was over as soon as it startedtiny kitchen, one bathroom, boxy living room. The four of them would be sharing an apartment that was smaller than the drafty old kitchen in the farmhouse.Without a word, they grabbed boxes and started about the business of unpacking in rooms that were inches away from one another rather than feet. Hattie walked over to a dirty square window in her new shared bedroom. She wiped it clean, hoping to see something that would remind her of Iowa, but the window only looked out onto more concrete and glass. A wave of sadness washed over herthe first crack in the numbness that shed been feeling for the past month since she found out about the move. She turned her back and lowered her head so Evelyn wouldnt see her, but then the sobs came, each louder than the previous one. There was a hand on her shoulder. She wanted to put the smile back on because she knew it would be better for Evelyn and everyone else that way, but she couldnt summon it now. She turned around and saw her blurry sister through tear-filled eyes. In front of her face, Evelyn was holding a folded-up picture of the whole family in front of the farmhouse.I miss it too, Evelyn began, but we dont have to forget it.Together, they taped the picture to the corner of the bedroom window so they could see it whenever they wanted.
