"An Early Missile Guidance System" In December of 1941, the United States of America entered World War II. During the next four years, the nation would be called upon to make great personal sacrifices and to arrive at innovative solutions to life and death problems on a global scale. The nation’s creative energies were harnessed as they had never been before. Some of the ideas and plans that were implemented during that period were brilliant. Others were discarded as impractical. Some of the initiatives displayed a rare and brash boldness typical of the American spirit. The story you are about to read is one of these. Early in the war the nation’s military began to think seriously about the development of a guided missile system of the type routinely used in military engagements today. The potential benefits were clear. An unmanned missile system would be cost-efficient, since people would not have to be trained to fly it. If we could guide an unmanned missile toward an enemy target, the likelihood of hitting the target would be increased. American lives would be preserved and enemy strength would be weakened. Also, our military knew that the Germans were working on an unmanned missile system. Thus, they urgently sought a solution to the guidance problem. A potential solution came from an unlikely source: Dr. B. F. Skinner, a nationally prominent psychologist. Dr. Skinner made an appointment to demonstrate his system to a room full of high-level military decision makers. The demonstration was very successful. The guidance system was small and performed with high levels of accuracy on test targets. Then, one of the enthusiastic military observers asked for an explanation of how the system worked. Dr. Skinner responded by opening the case housing the system. Inside was a pigeon that had been trained to keep a pointer on a moving target. The pigeon controlled the pointer by pecking at a bar that determined the pointer’s position. Dr. Skinner controlled the pigeon’s behavior by the use of rewards. When the bird was performing the task successfully, small food pellets were automatically dispensed. This encouraged the bird to perform its assigned task as successfully as possible. As you might guess, Dr. Skinner’s solution was a bit too bold for adoption by the military. Nonetheless, in my view, it was an innovative solution to what at the time was a difficult problem to solve.
From "An Early Missile Guidance System"

A. Military personnel were very surprised at how Dr. Skinner's system operated.
B. Military personnel were more concerned with saving money than with being innovative.
C. Military personnel had often employed birds to assist in battles.
D. Military personnel had gotten plans for missiles from Germany.

a.I want to see the film, but i ..............

b.I ................Rojina in town in a few day ago .(meet)

Answers

First, let's correct the misspelled words to make the question clearer:

Put the verb into the correct form and complete the sentences.

a. I went to see the film, but I ..............  it. (not/enjoy)

b. I ................Rojina in town a few days ago. (meet)

Answer:

a. I went to see the film, but I didn't enjoy it.

b. I met Rojina in town a few days ago.

Explanation:

The sentences above use verbs in the past tense. This tense is used to express actions that were completed at a specific time in the past. To regular verbs in the past, we add -d, -ed, or -ied (danced, cooked, studied). Irregular verbs, on the other hand, are different, each one of them having its own form (meet-met, sing-sang, speak-spoke).

In the negative form, the past tense needs the auxiliary verb "did" and "not" (contraction: didn't). The main verb, however, remains in its base form (I didn't meet).

Having that in mind, we can complete the sentences in the following manner:

a. I went to see the film, but I didn't enjoy it.

b. I met Rojina in town a few days ago.

Explanation:

Passage A

Orange juice is an excellent way for you to add vitamin C to your diet. Before you can pour yourself a delicious, nutritious glass of orange juice, the oranges need to get from the farm to your table. It all starts with the farmer.

To begin, a citrus farmer, someone specializing in citrus fruit farming, cultivates orange trees. Orange trees do not bear fruit overnight. It takes an orange tree between three to fifteen years to mature enough to grow fruit. Once a tree flowers, it can take between seven to twelve months before the fruit is ripe enough to harvest.

After the fruit is harvested, it makes its way to the processing plant. Here, hundreds of ripe oranges are collected from citrus farms. The fruit is inspected, washed, and squeezed to release the juice. The collected orange juice is then filtered to remove seeds and chunks of orange. Once it has been filtered, it is pasteurized. This means the juice is rapidly heated to high temperatures to kill germs and bacteria before being packaged. As a final step, the packaged juice is shipped to local supermarkets to be purchased by consumers.

While the packaging process is completed rather quickly, that carton of juice you enjoy every morning actually takes years of care and attention to produce. So the next time you take a sip of that tart, delicious liquid gold, think of the many hands that helped get it to your table.
Passage B

Planting a Home Garden

One way to enjoy a healthier lifestyle is to grow your own vegetables. That way, you know they are free from harmful chemicals. Where do you start if you want to grow your own healthy food?

Start with the Location

If this is your first adventure in gardening, start small. Choose plants that are easy to tend and that will grow well in the soil you have. The soil is an important part of choosing your garden's location because the soil is what has the nutrients plants need to live. After planting, you may need to add fertilizer to the soil so that the plants form strong roots and stay healthy. You also need to choose a place that has enough space for the plants you want to grow. Not all plants grow in the same way. Consider which plants prefer sunlight and which prefer shade. This will help with picking the best spot for your garden.

Planning Before Planting

Once you have decided where you will plant your garden, you can move on to planning your garden's layout. You don't want your tall plants growing next to the shorter ones and blocking out the sun. Some plants benefit from growing near each other. For example, corn is very happy growing near peas, beans, and melons. You also want to make sure there is enough room between the rows to allow for weeding. Proper planning ensures planting success.

Before You Can Eat Your Veggies

Getting your plants in good soil isn't enough to ensure food on your table. Plants also need water and additional fertilizer. They may also need supports to grow on or help against pests such as ants and caterpillars. Depending on the type of plants you choose to grow, it can be 70 days to five years before you can harvest and enjoy the fruit of your labor. Growing your own vegetables is satisfying but also takes time and dedication.

Describe each person and the significance of his/her element: a. Sayuri (water), b. Satsu (wood), c. Pumpkin (wood to fire), d. Hatsumomo (fire), e. Mameha (earth), f. Chairman (earth) and g. Nobu (metal).

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

This question refers to the characters in the novel “Memoirs of a Geisha”, by Arthur Golden.

a. Sayuri

The main character Sayuri’s element is water. Just like water, Sayuri is adaptable, flexible, but also incredibly strong. She has the malleability to adjust to new situations, just like she did when she was sold as a child to a Geisha house. Once she understood there was no escaping this new condition, she quickly learned how to navigate it. But she also has the strength of water coming through the gates of a dam. She faces her enemy, Hatsumomo, bravely, cunningly.

b. Satsu

Satsu is Sayuri’s sister. Instead of being sold to a Geisha House, Satsu was sold to a brothel. Unlike Sayuri, Satsu’s element is wood. She does not adapt as well to new situations. She finds a way to go back home, unfortunately leaving her sister behind. Home and that which is familiar seems to be crucial for Satsu.

c. Pumpkin

Pumpkin is Sayuri’s friend when they are kids, but ends up becoming her enemy once they grow up. They are raised to compete against each other as Geishas. Pumpkin’s teacher is Hatsumomo, whose explosive personality feeds off of Pumpkin’s feeble one. Pumpkin is wood to Hatsumomo’s fire, obeying and fearing her deeply. Once Hatsumomo is gone, part of her hatred for Sayuri remains in Pumpkin’s heart.

d. Hatsumomo

Hatsumomo is Sayuri’s foil, her complete opposite. Sayuri is water, Hatsumomo is fire. She does not adapt, but destroys whatever obstacles are in her way. However, fire’s life is shorter than water’s. Once there is no more fuel, fire is extinguished. Once water is poured over it, fire is gone. Sayuri’s strength ends up being stronger than Hatsumomo’s. She leaves the Geisha house for good.

e. Mameha

Mameha is Sayuri’s teacher, and her element is earth. She is a realistic, patient woman, whose wisdom is of great value to young and impulsive Sayuri. Mameha understands how the world functions, how society works, what is expected of her. She does not try the impossible, but she can see the cracks through which she can get what she wants. She also curbs her ambition, accepting her role more easily than Sayuri.

f. Chairman

Just like Mameha, the Chairman’s element is earth. They have a lot in common. The chairman is also a realistic man. And his ambitions too are curbed by his acceptance of reality. He is Sayuri’s love interest and, even though he is also in love with her, he will gladly step aside when he realizes his friend Nobu seems to like Sayuri.

g. Nobu

Nobu is hard and cold like his element, metal. He is a survivor, a hero, someone to whom the Chairman owes his life. His personality, however, is much less likable than the Chairman’s. Nobu is impatient, demanding, rude, straightforward. It is Sayuri’s flexibility and intelligence that ends up attracting him to her.
