100 POINTS BRAINLY INCLUEDED
SHARKS' TEETH
Langston Carter

The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.

We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

Create a utopian society. What would make our world better/perfect in our eyes? 5-6 sentences

Answers

Answer:

Answer below, written in narrative form (modify if needed)

Explanation:

We lived smooth sailing lives. We all woke up each morning to read about the low crime rates, affordable healthcare, and peaceful politics in the newspaper. It was a new world that challanged the past, and we proved that utopia is possible- or so we thought. People lived in harmony, regardless of differences like race, gender, sexuality, or belief. It was almost unbelievable that college, mental help, and housing was free, along with other necessities that the anyone should be entitled to. Even I couldn't grasp the fact that people once forced to live on the streets or were denied basic human rights for something as ridiculous as "not thinking they deserved it", simply for being different.

Choose the well punctuated conjunctive adverb to complete the sentence. These obvious contamination problems have long been known____what is not often realised is the organic matter carried in ground water can contaminate samples. " a. ,however, " "b. :however," "c. ; however, " d. However

Answers

Answer:

The correctly punctuated conjunctive adverb can be found in option c. ; however,

The sentence is then:

These obvious contamination problems have long been known; however, what is not often realised is the organic matter carried in ground water can contaminate samples.

Explanation:

"However" indicates a relationship of contrast between two independent clauses. When we wish to join those clauses to form a compound sentence, we must punctuate properly. The right way to do it is by placing a semicolon before and a comma after "however". This is why letter C is correct.

Another possibility would be using a full stop/period before "however" and a comma after it. In this case, we would not be forming a compound sentence, though. Letter D is incorrect because it is missing both the period and the comma. Letters A and B do not follow any of those possibilities.

Why Do We Have Schools?

Education in our society serves many purposes, but there are three main functions. First, students learn skills that will help prepare them for society. Writing, reading, and mathematics are essential in today’s workplace and many people learn these skills in school. Second, schools serve communities. Whether by functioning as polling locations during elections, or providing safe havens for students in temporary living situations, public schools add value to communities. Third, public schools provide a structured environment for children to engage in productive activities during many days of the year while their adult caretakers may be working. In other words, public schools also provide day care. These are three of the primary reasons why we have schools in our society.

Later that month, on September 16, Jane Yatman set out to ride 700 miles, a feat which she accomplished in 81 hours, 5 minutes. "Miss Yatman plainly showed the effects of the terrible strain in her countenance," reported the New York Times, "and she said that the ride was torture during the last twenty-five miles." Those miles, and indeed the entire last century, were ridden in a drenching rainstorm.

–Wheels of Change,

Sue Macy

Why is the statement by the New York Times subjective?

Someone else might think that Yatman’s expression was one of determination.

It is unlikely that anyone would disagree with the reporter’s opinion of the events.

Most people would see Yatman’s face and decide her expression was one of pain.
